Quick safety checklist

Step-by-step — Initialize your Ledger Hardware Wallet

1. Power on and choose setup

Power on the device by connecting the USB cable to a computer or power adapter. The device screen will guide you through initial setup. Choose "Set up as new device" if you are creating a new wallet.

2. Create a PIN

Select a PIN code directly on the device screen. The PIN protects access to the device itself. Memorize it and do not store it alongside your recovery phrase.

3. Write down your recovery phrase

The device will show a 24-word recovery phrase (some models may use 12 or 24 words). Write the words on the supplied recovery sheet in the exact order shown. Do not photograph the phrase or store it digitally.

4. Confirm the recovery phrase

The device will ask you to confirm a few words. This verifies you wrote them down correctly. Only after confirmation is the backup complete.

5. Install Ledger Live (optional utility)

Ledger Live is Ledger's official management application. Install Ledger Live only from official sources. After installation, connect your Ledger device to Ledger Live to add accounts and install apps. This step is optional at first, but recommended for convenient management of multiple cryptocurrencies. This guide intentionally omits any external links or prompts for login credentials.

6. Install apps on the device

Use the Ledger Live app manager to install the specific cryptocurrency apps you need on your Ledger device. Each crypto asset may require a corresponding app to be installed for sending and receiving transactions.

Receiving and sending cryptocurrency

To receive crypto, open the account in Ledger Live (or another trusted wallet compatible with Ledger), request a receive address from the device, and verify the address on the device screen before sharing it. Always confirm that the on-screen address matches the one shown in your management software.

To send crypto, create the transaction in Ledger Live (or compatible software) and confirm the transaction details on the Ledger device. The device signs transactions offline, ensuring your private keys never leave the device.

Best practices and tips

Troubleshooting essentials

If your device is unresponsive, try a different USB cable and port. If you lose the device but have the recovery phrase, you can restore your accounts on a new Ledger device or any compatible recovery tool that supports the same derivation method. If you suspect the recovery phrase was exposed, move funds to a new wallet immediately after generating a fresh recovery phrase on a secure device.

Security reminder

Your private keys are stored on the Ledger Hardware Wallet and are protected by the device's secure element. The recovery phrase is effectively the key to your funds—anyone with those words can access and transfer your assets. Treat recovery words with the same seriousness as physical cash or legal documents.
